How do you Clean the Evaporator Coils on a Central AC Unit?

During the annual preventive maintenance of your air conditioning system, remember to pay special attention to parts of the system that are not visible in the system cabinet or in the air handler enclosure. The unit evaporator coil is one addition to this layered component. If you are having problems with a dirty evaporator coil, your central air conditioner may become less efficient, produce less, and damage or malfunction may occur. Here, is some necessary data on the role of air conditioners and the value of evaporator coils, along with some instructions on how to wash air evaporator coils.

How to clean the coils on the air vaporizer

Clean the air evaporator coil when you gain access.

The room air conditioner must have an access door that can be removed to open the evaporator coil. If necessary, refer to your air conditioner's instruction manual to locate the inlet and evaporator coils.

·       Turn off the thermostat

·       Remove the screws or other connection to loosen the faceplate

·       Position the panels and screws so they don't get lost

To clean the AC evaporator coil with compressed air

Light build-up of dirt and other material can often be removed by applying compressed air to loosen the evaporator coil. With compressed air over the coil in the opposite direction of normal airflow, from the detergent to the dirtier side.

For particularly stubborn areas, place the air outlet near the bottom of the dirt. If you are using high pressure air, aim it at a 90-degree angle or directly through the fins. This will stop damaging the fins. Maintain a constant flow of air through the coil. This will remove debris without forcing it further into the fins and making it more difficult to remove. Avoid blowing dust, dirt, and debris into gutters or living spaces in your home.

Cleaning the air evaporator coil with a brush

Brush cleaning can be a useful technique for removing small debris from the evaporator coil. Brush cleaning allows the use of liquids or substances. This gives you more power over the power placed on the drum and fins.

·       Use a brush on the reels and remove any build-up of dirt

·       Scrub with a brush to loosen hard-to-remove material

·       Avoid using a wire brush or a brush with hard bristles as this can damage the fins

To clean the evaporator coil with a mild detergent and water

Instead of commercially available detergents, you can also clean the rolls with mild soap and warm water. Mix hot water and regular detergent in a spray bottle, handle sprayer, or garden sprayer. Apply liquid and detergent to the evaporator coil. Allow a few minutes to a few seconds for the solution to absorb and release dirt. Reapply if necessary. Clean loose items with a soft cloth or brush.
